Conflict, hatred, and injustice seem to be the norm rather than the exception in our world, our nation, our communities, our homes. The fractures and fissures run so deep that we're paralyzed by our hopelessness, writing off peace as a far-fetched option for the afterlife.

Even if there was the possibility of peace, where would we begin?

Instead of disengaging, Jon Huckins and Jer Swigart invite us to move toward conflict and brokenness, but not simply for the sake of resolving tensions and ending wars. These modern-day peacemakers help us understand that because peacemaking is the mission of God, it should also be the vocation of his people. So peace is no longer understood as merely the absence of conflict̢ۥpeace is when relationships once severed have been repaired and restored.

Using biblical and current-day illustrations of everyday peacemakers, Mending the Divides equips disciples of Jesus to move toward conflict and seek the restoration of our relationships, our communities, and our world, offering practical steps to engage in the kingdom-building work of waging peace.

"Mending the Divides offers both invitation and challenge. The book rests on solid theological ground and reaches into the very heart of what it means to follow Jesus in creative peacemaking. As Jer and Jon relate their stories of partnering with peacemakers around the globe, I was challenged to consider my own context and practices. Joining Jesus in his work of restoration requires going beyond my comfort zone and coming alongside my marginalized brothers and sisters, all children of God, in discovering new ways of contending with them for their wholeness and freedom.

See, immerse, contend, restore; Mending the Divides offers this clear and concise framework for peacemaking. This book, these practices are desperately needed in our conflicted world today."

  • Mending the Divides is honest and relatable, and a must-read for anyone who wants to help create peace in the world but isn't sure where to start. Jon & Jer let us in on their journey of self-reflection and scriptural study, and guide us to a renewed understanding of who God created us to be. Through this book and the work of The Global Immersion Project, they offer tangible practices we all can employ as everyday peacemakers working toward restoration of what’s broken in our own lives & communities.
  • This book is well timed for the conflict taking place in our homes, communities and around the world today. Jon and Jer outline the scriptural picture of Jesus as a peacemaker and how we can do the same.

Jon and Jer have provided great examples and stories to outline their key principles of Seeing, Immersing, Contending and Restoring as a way to heal broken systems and relationships. Each chapter offers compelling questions to challenge our own personal biases and areas where we might be complicit to conflicts in our community.

The last chapters outline specific steps to take to live out the key principles of everyday peacemaking and as a student of Jon & Jer's through the Global Immersion Project, I can attest that their practical steps do work!

One of my favorite quotes from the book is, "Everyday Peacemakers are men and women who choose to see the humanity, dignity, and image of God in others and who understand the plight of the voiceless." For such a time as this, we need everyday peacemakers who are willing to see the humanity and dignity in others and treat them as unique individuals made in the image of God.

If you are struggling with the conflict and brokenness in our country and world today, this book will provide great insights on steps you can take to bring healing!
  • Beautiful. Timely. Important.

This brief book is so needed.

I was lucky enough to be gifted an advance copy, but I bought a digital copy (and 10 more!) just so I can give that one away to someone else who will need it.

This is like a spiritual successor to "The Irresistible Revolution" but way more practical.

Jon and Jer have poured the essence of their life's work into an easy to understand, compelling, and utterly practical book that is going to equip people who want to practice the kind of discipleship Jesus calls us to - and never knew how or where to start.

This is a good read for anyone that's been frustrated by the church not looking Christlike.

This is a good read for anyone that's been looking for avenues to take theology out of the lofty academic framework and apply it to the mundane and nitty gritty parts of life.

    It's challenging and life giving.

    A true gift.
  • I have heard Jon and Jer speak in several different rooms over the last few years and consider it a privilege every time. The wisdom they have to share and the approach they take to the life of Jesus has transformed how I inform my faith and interact with those around me. It is an on the ground, tangible, risky, life giving way to live. I am so glad their words are now written in a book so that more people can access a transforming framework and better understand how their faith can live itself out in real life. In a broken, fractured, divided world, to hear of a God who is about restoration is hope.
  • In short, Mending the Divides is compelling, tangible, urgent, convicting, and real. Instead of far-fetched pipeline dreams of world peace, Jon and Jer offer real life examples of what it looks like to be a person of peace in day to day life, whether in a high-conflict area or in the midst of your neighborhood. This book is a timely piece for our conflict-ridden world, and offers hope and purpose for diving in to the hard work of peacemaking. I'll definitely be passing this book around, as I challenge myself and others to live a life of peace and justice.
  • A big Thank You to Jon & Jer, for the work they are doing at The Global Immersion Project, and for documenting the important ideas and concepts that make their work so compelling and life changing. For those of us who care about our world and have eyes to see the brokenness in our midst, Jon & Jer offer wise and practical words to guide us in our quest for restoration and healing. This book is a delight to read, full of stories of courage, humility and creative love. In a world where conflict is all around, how refreshing to be part of a discussion about reconciliation and "discovering the blessed humanity, dignity and image of God in others."

  • Compelling and concise - Jon and Jer do a fantastic job highlighting how peace or "shalom" is central to God's mission in the world and our response as disciples of Christ. Whether you're interested in the topics or already sold and looking for ways to communicate on a theological or practical level, this book is for you. Thanks for documenting your journeys and being part of the conversation as we all learn how to better follow Jesus and love our neighbors and enemies!
