Spiritual Freedom From an Experience of the Ignatian Exercises to the Art of Spiritual Guidance John J English S J English 9780829408232 Books Reviews

  • I needed this text for a course that I am facilitating. The books arrived in good shape and on time. This is an excellent text for those who are leading and studying the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. The author gives many tips and good information that follows the various weeks or movements of the Exercises. Having worked with this for over 8 years, I recommend this text.
  • is vital in the person's life when they pick up their cross and follow Jesus. I've read other John English books/articles and he's more than a competent guide for going deeper into a spiritual life for the person in today's world. I cant say enough about this spiritual treasure for those who are desiring a more intimate relationship with Jesus.
  • Thus far it has met my expectations re. the freedom of spirit gained through the Ignation exercises. As a spiritual director I am convinced of the importance of imagry to help in our transformation and the way that they help us to know Jesus better. English helps us to remember the importance of the dialogue between director and exercitant and that the Holy Spirit is the liaison between the two. A beautiful thing to remember that the true guide is always the Holy spirit.
  • Good writing but not what I thought would be.
  • Excellent.
  • This is a on going journey for me and this book is so helpful. Glad I purchased it.
  • The topic has always fascinated me and so I decided to study it and learn how to attain this type of freedom. The author's approach is clear and while this is a dense topic the writer's style is straight forward.
  • There are books which present a more "universal" context of Ignatian spirituality. English keeps the original terminology as used by Ignatius. In light of modern psycological terminology and especially Jungian concepts, the wording may cause slow going for those not familiar with Roman Catholism. But Ignatius and his exercises do have import to the post-modern search for spiritual growth and discernment.

Before reading this work, perhaps Margaret Silf's work "Inner Compass" may be a more understandable primer.
